Microdata is a specification used in web development and markup languages to embed machine-readable data (e.g schema markup) within HTML documents. It provides a way to annotate content on web pages to make it more understandable for search engines, browsers, and other software applications. In HTML templates, microdata is often mapped to particular HTML components so that the structure and description of the page are tightly coupled. This can sometimes cause problems when you are deploying JSON-LD using Schema App and want to ensure there is a single source of schema markup.
There are a few ways you can remove microdata.
If you are using a plugin, we may offer a setting to filter out microdata.
- How do I remove the microdata from my WordPress theme?
- How do I enable the microdata filter in Schema App for the Shopify Integration?
If you are not using one of our plugins but are technically capable, you can check out SchemaFilter, freely available on our Microdata Filter GitHub page. The support article Using Schema Filter to Remove Default Markup provides additional information about implementing this.
You may also want to contact your webpage theme creator, or web development team to find out how they use microdata and whether you can remove it.
